The economic, political and social determinants of global health issues are addressed in the following short-essays which together contrast policies and their implications in the field the relevance of global health to development and international affairs.


Essay 1: The legal and policy principles central to how international drug-policy is understood and addressed to promote the expansion of Opioid Substitution Therapy (OST) within the carceral system —especially jails.


Essay 2: Air quality as a global health challenge is addressed by discussing the power dynamics involved in INGOs policy initiatives such as its governance and finance— that make air pollution as the main cause of various respiratory-related diseases invisible; hence leading to weak political salience and lack of funding, among other limitations.


Essay 3: Gender-based injustice coupled by norms and the inequalities entailed,undermine the health and wellbeing of women, men, and gender minorities. As such, impacts of sexual violence on all genders are profound and multidimensional. The essay addresses broader social and cultural dimensions of global health in relation to principles such as equity, justice, and human rights, as well as the limitations faced across genders.
